Eagle Plaza is a new open space for San Francisco’s western SOMA neighborhood and the leather cultural district. The design reconfigures an underutilized city street with a chicane to slow traffic and create wider sidewalks, spaces for trees, plantings, and seating areas atop a maze of subsurface infrastructure. New pedestrian-oriented features allow the street to be easily closed and to come alive with colorful and quirky South of Market culture and rituals. The technical execution of the project required incorporation of the public works asset protection standards and Fire Department vehicular requirements to build a small yet complex shared way and public plaza.
